First time climbers and visitors
If you are new to rock climbing or if this is your first time climbing at City Summit, we have prepared some information for you below to help make your time at the centre as fun as possible.
Before you arrive
City Summit is Perth’s newest custom built climbing centre and we pride ourselves on making indoor rock climbing accessible to those who are new to rock climbing or who are inexperienced climbers. First of all you can be happy knowing that you are in safe hands. City Summit wants to make sure you have the most enjoyable experience at the centre so please let us know how we can help.
If you have a group of 10 or more participants then you will need to call to make a booking for your group. Any groups of under 10 people are welcome to drop into the centre at any time. Please note that inductions are generally held every half hour so it is advisable to arrive just before the hour or half hour to reduce wait times.
City Summit has a fully catered cafe (*reopening early 2018) and functions venue upstairs that serves great food and fresh yummy juices. If you require catering for a group booking or event then please phone in advance to arrange.
The best thing to wear while climbing is something comfortable and runners/sneakers for your footwear. If needed you can hire climbing shoes for $8 which will greatly improve your climbing ability. Climbers generally use chalk on their fingers while climbing. While this is not essential, it does greatly help with your grip and chalk bags are available to hire for $3.
Please complete the Liability Waiver Form online and submit it to our system. This will ensure we have all your details and can legally allow you to climb in the centre. If you are Under 18 you will need approval from your parent or guardian.
Getting to the centre
City Summit is located at Unit 2, 26 Harris Road in Malaga. Turn into Truganina Street from Alexander Drive and take your first right into Harris Road. You will need to follow the road around the bend to the left and you will see our sign out the front. There are lots of marked parking bays both in front of and through the gate.
Once you arrive
Please enter through the front door and make your way to the counter to say hello to one of our friendly staff members. Let them know if you are new to rock climbing or a first time climber at City Summit and that you have already completed the Liability Waiver Form online. Please note that children under 12 require an adult to belay for them. Once you have tendered the correct change, you will be shown through to the lockers and change rooms. If you need a keyed locker then we can arrange one for you at the front counter for a $10 refundable deposit.
When you are ready, an instructor will guide you on how to fit your harness and then give you a run down of the centre rules. You will be given a demonstration of how to correctly belay a climber using our Edelrid Megajul belay devices (safety is a priority). While the instructor supervises you to correctly belay, they will also offer the climber advice on how to navigate the climbing wall. The climbing induction will take approximate 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the group and how quickly each person picks up the belaying technique.
For those who have previously climbed, we will give you a quick run through of our belaying technique as it is different to the other gyms in Perth. Our belay of choice in the centre is now a Edelrid MegaJul as opposed to the usual Gri Gri.
Once you are comfortable and demonstrating correct techniques, you are free to explore the top rope climbing walls in the centre or try out the bouldering wall (a 6 meter high free climbing wall with safety mats below).
If you loved your experience then ask about some of the classes run in the centre. We also have a functions area for your next event or kids birthday party or you could consider using the centre for your next work team building activity or social day. More information can be found under The Group Bookings or Classes heading on the website. Alternatively you can call the centre 9248 7035.
